WELLINGTON v. HAWKE'S BAY

Wellington, March 20.

The match between Wellington and Hawke's Bay began to-day, and was interrupted by a heavy fall of rain at the beginning, but the weather cleared' and one innings a side was almost completed. The visitors only made 95; Canning 21, Lusk 16, Gore 15 and Staite 11. Four men were caught behind the wickets off Holdsworth's fast bowling. Wellington began badly, losing 5 wickets for 51, but after that the bowling was collared. Weybourne, who was missed twice, made 41, Waters 86 by free driving and leg hitting, and Tucker 64. The two latter put on 127. Fannin bowled well at the start, but fell off, and was much punished by Waters. At time of drawing the stumps the total was 222 for rino wickets. The attendance was small.

March 22.

Wellington's first innings closed for 222, there being no additions to the score. Wilson took three wickets for 32, Fanuin two for 76, Hughes, two for 37, and Gore two for 44. Requiring 127 to save an inning's defeat, Hawke's Bay lost seven wickets for 79 —Lusk 30, and Cato not out 16, being the chief scorers.

Later. Wellington won by an innings and six runs.
