Notwithstanding that McKinlej had. almost all the moneyed interests at his back in the recent presidential fight, his victory does not appear to have been nearly so overwhelming as was first predicted. By the big majority which McKinley scored in the popular vote en masse, there is no doubt j the decisive nature of his triumph, i but the majority on the Electoral College is ninety-seven, or seventy-1 three less than the telegraphed antici- ] pations of Mr Smalley, the Times' New York correspondent.
