Auckland, March 16.
The Town Clerk brought under the notice of the Railway authorities the amount of "whistling which takes place ■when engines near the jailway station, complaints having been made by residents on behalf of invalids. A letter has been received from the Department in "Wellington stating that the engineers have been instructed to abate the nuisance as much as possible.
The residence of Mr D. Caldwell (of Macky, Logan, Steen and Co.) Carltou Gore Road, is reported as having been broken into. Mr and Mrs Caldwell have been staying at Lake Takapuna for a week or two. Yesterday Mr Caldwell paid a visit to the residence to see that everything was safe, when to his surprise he found that the whole house had been ransacked and searched. The child's money-box had been broken into, and the contents taken, also some money in a box belonging to the servant. So far as is known, nothing but money has been taken, but that will not be actually known until the house has been restored to its normal condition. Fortunately Mr Caldwell took the precaution before going to Takapuna to place all the plate, jewellery, etc., in the strong room of the firm, otherwise th« loss would have been much greater.
