School of Mines.

The monthly meeting of the. Council of the School of Mines was held last evening which was attended by Messrs Dunlop (in the chair), Adams, Paul, Melhose, Denby, Burch, Hague-Smith and Clark.

Gold Medal.—Mr J. A. Miller, on behalf of Mr Geo. Fleming, wrote :— " Mr Geo. Fleming desires me to writ* you in reference to the successful candidate in mining surveying nt the recent examination of School of Mines' students. I understand the Council have disqualified Mr Fleming from taking certificates on account of a rule regarding attendance at the school lectur«3 during at least two* terms, but this rule does not apply to the competition for Mr Rhodes' medal, as reference to that gentleman's letter on the subject will prove. At the recent examination Mr Fleming received the largest ti umber of marks for raining surveying, and therefore claims the - medal referred to, and desires me, on his behalf, to protest against you or your Council awarding or handing it to anyone else. I trust that before parting with the medal you will lay this protest before your Council, and ask them to give the matter their serious consideration.— The previous decision of the Council as to the award of the medal was persevered in, and the letter was dealt with as " received."

Drawing Master.—The Minister ci Mines having authorised the appointment of a drawing roaster fur the School at a salary of £52 per year, the Secretary stated that at the Chairman's request communications had passed between he and Mr Jas. Parr, engaged at the Techuical School.. Auckland, with the result that the gentleman named had decided to take up the duties at the School and would pr&bably be leaving Auckland that (Friday) night. Secretary foT Mines wrote ;—•• Referiug to your letter of 21st August I, am directed by the Minister of Miues to forward for information of your committee copies of the estimates amounting to £580, prepared by Mr Gow (lately Inspector of Mines) of the cost of a fresh water supply aud a newstamper battery of three heads for the School, and lam to inform you that the Government will be prepared to grant a subsidy of £500 towards the cost of the works in question as well as for the erection of a suitable compartment in which to carry on public assays as suggested in your letter, on being informed that £150 has . been raised by local subscription." The estimate referred to is as follows: —In order to shorten the distance and avoid several bends in the present line of pipes to the School I have decided on a new and straight live from the School door up to Cochrane street to the city main, a total distance of 1325ft—say 1400 ft.
