Brevities.

The population of Karangahake is now given as about 2000. At the Auckland Police Court yesterday a man named John Dunne was charged with stealing £15 from Gerald Fitzgerald on the passage of the Terranora from Thames to Auckland on IHh March. He was remanded to the 17th inst.

The man Henderson, who was arrested at Te Awamutu on Saturday last on the charge of committing an assault on a little girl, was brought up on Tuesday, before Messr P- O'Connor and J. H. Mandeno, J.P.'s. After hearing the evidence of the girl and other witnesses/ the Bench committed the accused, who reserved his defence, for trial A youth named Black, snipe shooting on the foreshore at Shortland on Thursday afternoon, narrowly escaped serious injury through his gun going off accidentally with the muzzle turned towards him. The pellets with which the cartridge was charged didenter his body near theabdomen, but were fortunately easily extracted by Dr Williams.

An accident occurred at the Victoria mine yesterday which resulted in Mr John Addicoat being injured. In working in the Btope above the N». 1 level he fired a hole and the charge duly exploded. On returning to break down the fractured rock he started to work before examining its state, and without warning a large piece fall down, a portion of which struck him upon the right arm. The limb was severely lacerated and one of the fingers was broken, this constituting the extent of the injuries, which are more painful than serious.
