DEATH OF W. H. TAIPARI.
On the arrival of the ps. Wakatere to-day at about noon, it became known that Wirope Hoterene Taipari, the well-known Thames chief, had breathed his last off Tararu, about ' half-an-hour before the steamer reached the wharf. For some days past Taipari had been seriously ill in Auckland from various complications, and when the old chief was conveyed on board the Wakatere this moraing, his condition was such that it is scarcely surprising that he should have failed to leave the steamer alive. From the wharf a Maori cortege about thirty strong, headed by the Native minister, carried the remains on a stretcher to I'arawai, where the tangi will be held. Taipari was about 60 years of age. His whole life, dating from the early days, has been closely wrapped up with the rise of this peninsula as a goldfield, and its transition from a barbaric waste to settlement and civilisation. Taipari, whose influence as a chief was very great and widespread, has always been on the side of law and order in the settlement of land disputes, and his decease is a matter of regret to both pakelia and Maori.
