The Queen's Reign.
(Per Press Association.)
Wellington, March 8
The Defence Department has asked for the use of Newton Park for about three weeks from the 15th inst. for the purpose of drilling the volunteers who proceed to England in connection with the Queen's record reign.
March 9,
A deputation of local Volunteer officers waited on the Defence Minister, urging the Government to grant assistance in sending a team of riflemen to Bisley. The deputation suggested that the Government should grant £ for £ subsidy upon any sum subscribed by the public. Hon. Mr Thompson said that personally, the project had his sympathy, but the question was one which would be considered by the Cabinet on the return of the Premier. It is understood that half the amount necessary to send the Wellington representatives has already been guaranteed.
