ANNIVERSARY SERVICES
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Koru, Monday.
Anniversary services in connection with the local Sunday School were held in the Kopu Hall for the first time yesterday. Although the Sunday School has been in existence now for two years, yet last year through some omission anniversary services were not held. The hall, which has been kindly lent by Mr E. IT. lizard (Superintendent of the Sunday School) for Church and Sunday School purposes ever since its erection, was very tastefully decorated with ferns and flowers by the teachers and elder scholors. In the afternoon the Rev. F. W. Boys preached to a fair congregation of friends and parents of the children, choosing as his subject, 2 ( hr. 24 chap. 5 verse, showing that the children were so many stones for building God's temple, and exhorted the teachers to be very careful in ti'aining the children in the way of God, and urging the parents to give the teachers every assistance and encoragement, instead of criticisiug them, as was often the case. In the evening, notwithstanding, the threatening aspect of the weather, there was a very good attendance, Mr Roberts preaching. The preacher, who was listened to with rapt attention, first spoke a few words to the children, choosing as his subject a red and a white flower, and showing from them how even the vegetable kingdom taught lessons of God. He then chose for his text Matthew XXII., part of verse 42, " What think ye of Christ," giving an excellent address, which was listened to very attentively by the congregation. During the evening Mr and Miss Evans rendered a duet—Sankey's hymn 607, "Ho, reapers in the whitened harvest," very nicely. The singing of the children, numbering over fifty, and of the choir was very good throughout both services, and reflected great credit on Miss Evans, who has taken great pains in training them, and Miss Tizard, who officiated at the harmonium.
On Tuesday evening the services will be concluded by au entertainment In the hall, at which a number of the children and some Thames friends will sing and recite. The Eevs. S. J. Serpell and F. W. Boys have promised to attend, so that no doubt an instructive and enjoyable evening will be spent. The collection for the two services during yesterday amounted to £1 6s, which is very good considering the state of the weather. The collection goes to the Sunday School funds.
