Rhodes Before the Committee.
(Per Press Association.)
London, March 7
Before the House of Commons Committee Mr Rhodes stated that he sold a number of shares in the British South Africa Chartered Co. to enable him to finance the first Matabele war and provide £94,000 towards the construction of the trans-continental telegraph line when the public refused to assist, He also paid £50,000 towards the fines of the raiders.
Mr Chamberlain examined Rhodes, his questions being directed towards eliciting information showing that it was impossible to prevent the strained relations between the Rand, Cape Colony, and the Transvaal Government from continuing.
