. Auckland, March 4. The University Senate resumed today, Dr. Fitchett, Prof. Gilroy, and Mr E. H: Grossinau were appointed examiners for the MaeMillim-Browu memorial prize to be awarded in 1899. On thß motion of Prof. Cook, the Senate resolved on German as an alternative for physics in the bachelor of music examination.
It was resolved to record W. V. Patetuertvas having passed in chemistry and physics in the intermediate medi-cal-examination.
■ Xa -the report of the supervisors' committee it was stated the cotnnfitWt{had -beard rumors that the pfaotici of cribbing or copying at examinations was prevalent throughout the colony, but no evidence was adduced to bear out this statement.
Y lbßftnauc« committee reported that ti&upbtne and expenditure for 1896 fcc*if::«ceeded the estimates. Last year the income totalled £5708, and the expenditure £5441, the surplus being £257. The excess in income was entirely due to increase in receipts froui the fees. There was evidence of the increasing scope of the University's operations, For the current year the income was estimated at £5700, and the expenditure at £5660. The accumulated capital of the scholarship account is £12,576. The finance committee recommended the Senate to offer for competition this year fourteen junior scholarships, each at £30 a year, tenable for three years, with au addition of £20 per year for each of those holders of scholarships who are obliged to live away from home to attend the university college. The report was adopted.
