MINING NEWS.

(By Our Special Reporter.)

CUMBERLAND. This company's exploring crosscut has been driven 300 feet, and at the present is passing through a favorable dais of country with every indication of the drive being in the channel of the lode system. It nay be of interest to know that the property is being worked by English money, ad it is expected that a company nil be formed in London shortly. OKION (Pvnv.) The work of exp'oration has been commenced npon this mine and so far a nice body of ore measuring 2ft thick has been unearthed, and from which a very fair prospect of eo'd is obtainable. This is very encotriging far a start, and probably as the work proceeds others of the same system may produce even better results. ARGOSY. Ihis morning Mr Melbose, Chairman of the Brokers' Association, received the fo lowing wire from Mr Jesse Sang, legal manager of the Argosy:—" Tw« pounds of colors and dabs." This apparently is Roing from the sublime to the ridiculous, but I am under the impression that so far as the discovery was. made in the first instance, tfeat the manager would be justified in telegraphing news oft hat nature but when there was no further improvement in the lode, and merely a fair show of eeneral ore the impor ance attached to it does not, in my opinion, wa rant the frivilous squandering of shareholders' money in a paltry telegram like the above.

KARAKA QTTBEN. The crossreef being driven npon on its north coarse at tht No. 2 level is a fine strong body of ore, highly charged witk a good class of mineral and mcasares 4 feet of solid matter, Qold is showing freely and is well impregnated in the solid quartz, and very oloaely associated with the mineral. The country being en'ered upon has become more firm in character and of amost congenial de»cription for the existence of a lode of highly auriferous propensities—being a crosslode it has every chance in its favor of meeting with the junctions of the various lodes trending the contrary course. At the present the dare is being advanced with a'l possible speed, and what the possibilities are in this direction are at present difficult to determine, let it be understood that the section of country in this direction is wholly urjeiplored, and entering on untried country with a fine «tronc body of ore like what is showing in the face of this No. 2 drive, it is only reasonable to surmise that something of very great importance may be discovered. VICTORIA. The advance of development work in this mine is. it may be said, progressing most favourably. The reef intersected in the exploring worka *t the No. 41e «1 is being energetioa'.y opened up, and since starting to drive upon its course it has assumed much larger dimensions, measuring in the face fully 12 inches of stone, in which gold is freely interspersed. This improvement is pleasing to chronicle, and should be a great impe us to the oompany to push on withtheir exploiting on a much more determined basis than has been the case with this class of work heretofo c, The stopes over the Nos. 1 and 2 levels an responsible for the bulk of cru?hinir material coming to hand, and from this section a lar*e output can be relied upon. The sinking of the winze below the No. 2 level is being actively carried oa, and an improvement in the class of ore oominj from here is now noticeable. Crushing on behalf of the company is now in progress at the May Queen Extended battery.
