BOROUGH COUNCIL.

■■ The ordinary fortnightly meeting of f the Borough Council was held on Thursday. Present: The Mayor (Mr T. Radford), and Crs Comer, Petts, Trembath, Scott, Foy, Davey, and Wood. Cr Comer apologised for the absence ©f N Gr Brown. The minutes of the previous meeting and also of a special meeting were read and confirmed.'■--'« v Gold Betubns.—The following were the gold returns purchased at the local feanch of the Bank of New South Wales during the last month:—Thames County, 2070zs 4dwts; Coromandel, 9ozs 9dwts ; Ohinemuri, sozs 16dwts ; Thames Borough, 786zs 15dwts. Academy of Music—Mr W. Woodward wrote asking for permission to reerect the balcony at tke Academy of Music, which had bee© torn away by a runaway horse and cart.—Permission subject to the approval of Foreman of Works. Keddell Stbeet.—Mr S. Cox wrote asking far employment, and complaining ■fibout fie condition of the' steps in Keddell street.—Referred to the Purposes Committee. Kibkwood Street.—Three residents of i Kirkwood street wrote asking that a concrete water table be formed in that street. —Referred to the General Purposes Committee. | A Neighbour's Cattle.—Mr John I Dennerley wrote requesting the Council W to form a footpath to his house at Tararu fc as the road was impassable at present for m women and children owing to his neighL feour's cattle.—Referred to the Foreman ■ of Works. | Sealby Steeet.—Mr H. L. Wight ""drew attention to the almost impassable state of the lower end of Sealey street, .and expressed a hope that the Council , would have it seen to immediately.— ■: The Mayor remarked that the road was certainly in a bad condition, but the winter was a bad time to repair roads, as i repair one would be to cut up another —Referred to Foreman of Works.

Notice .of Motion. —Cr Potts gave notice of motion as follows :-— "I hereby give notice that at a special /meeting of the. Council, to be held at 7..30 p.m. on Friday, June 28th inst., I will move :—'That the Council make the following rates for the year ending June 30th, 1896 : A general rate of one shilling in the £ on the rateable value of all rateable property within the Borough of Thames; also a library rate of one penny in the £ on the rateable value of such property aforesaid; also a Hospital and charitable aid rate of sixpence in the £ on the rateable value of the property aforesaid ; also a water rate for ordinary supply upoaajl. lands and buildings to which water is supplied whose rateable i value on the valuation roll of the Borough of Thames does not exceed £20, a rate of 10s per annum; exceeds £20, a rate of £2 10s per cent, on such value ; [upon all lands and Cbnildings to which water can be but is not supplied, situate within 100 yards from any part of the water works, a rate of one-half of the rates above mentioned; and in respect of the extraordinary water supply such rates and changes as are provided in By-law "No. 20, ana such other charges as may from time to time be fixed by. the Council; and with respect to all persons

receiving ordinary water supply to their dwellings and premises situate outside the limits of the Borough of Thames such rates and charges shall. be respectively : Upon each house or premises containing not more than five rooms, a l-ate of 10s per annum, upon each house or containing more than five rooms but not more than seven rooms, a rate of 22s 6d per annum, and upon each house or premises containing more than seven rooms a rate of 30s per annum ; aiid that each of such rates are payable on the 2nd day of July, 1895.'"

Bepokt ot Foreman or W»kks- The report of the Foreman of Works was read .—Authority was given to erect posts at street corners, where needed, to prerent drays cutting np the kerbing or asphalt.—lt was resolved to procure 100 yds ot metal to repair Pollen street, and also to put the road from the Moanatairi tramway to Burke street in repair, - The report was adopted. >■ Arrears oj Rates. —On the motion of the Mayor it was unanimously resolved that all cases where rates are in arrears [shall be placed in the hands of the [Borough solicitor for recovery. 1 Loan. Government Bill. —The Mayor [drew attention to the fact that a Bill ■would be introduced during the present fcession dealing with the amalgamation mi local bodies. He c(uite agreed that amalgamation in this direction was necesfcary, but as the Government did not intend to fuvnish the local bodies copies of Khe Bill, he would move: —"That the Kouncil request Mr McGowan member ■or the district, to keep them posted up Concerning the measure."—This was ■econded by Cr Potts, who remarked ■hat tlie Auckland City Council had-also ■^alt with this mater, and had passed a Resolution to the following effect:—"That In the receipt of any information the Real bodies affected by the Bill should Be called together." He would m; ye that Hie Council pass a similar resolution. — Hr Foy seconded, —Both motions were Hxried. ■ Waiotahi.—On the representation of Hr Davey, it was resolved to attend to the Had behind the Cambria battery. ■ The accounts were passed for payment, Hid the meeting terminated.
