PARLIAMENTARY GOSSIP.
(Rt Tbi.bgfaph»Spioiai Corbispondbnt
Wellington, This day. The attendance of the public at the meeting of Parliament was larger than usual yesterday. The day was floe, and the ladies congregated in numbers. So great was the press that not move than a third of those present found seate. The presence of the officers of the warships added to the ntmber of the Governor's staff. The speech has been favorably re•eived, but is sure to lead to a stirring debate. Th* cheerful and sanguine tone has instated the Opposition, who will discount the results' of Mr Ward's mission, and "question the lfgalityof the action of the Government re the Midland Eailway. Captain Euesoll objected to leave being granted ta Sir G. Grey without notice of motion. Bis actiin is deprecated by members of bo h sides, and it is admitted now to be a tactical blunder. The proposal to appoint an additional Minister is exercising the minds of members. Some say tint Mr Larnach will get it, but Mr E. M. Smith asks that a Nouh Island man should be appointed. The attendance of members of the House is large, but va the Council it is meagre. It is proposed to make the day of Mr "Ward's a.rivel Arbor Day, and the Treasurer and Mrs Ward will each plftnt pohutukawa trees. ,
