BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of c Borough Council was held last ght, when the following were prent: His Worship the Mayor (Chairan), and Crs Comer, Potts, Stewart, ibtt, Davey, and Wood. The Mayor apologised for the absence, Lrough illness, of Mr Wm. Carpenter, own Clerk, and expressed the hope, hich he knew was shared by the hole Council, that Mr Carpenter iyuld speedily recover. It would be few weeks before it could be seen >w his illness would result, and in the eantime it would be necessary to jpoint an Acting-Town Clerk. He ould move: •' That Mr Kernick unior clerk) be appointed Actingown Clerk and authorised to sign the lequesjM'o tem."— Cr Potts seconded, ating that Mr Kernick was well able > cjppe with the work.- —The motion as carried.

The minutes of the previous meeting ere read and confirmed. Apologies ere received for the absence of Cr Toy, idisposed, snd Cr BroAvn, who was re vented from coming by the bad ate, of the roads.

The Railway.—A letter was read •om Mr J. McGowan, member for le stating that he had been oi'king in the direction of theextension i the Thames-Te Aroha railway from •aeroa to the Thames, but as he had een ill, and was under the doctor's ands, he did not know whether he wild be able to address his conbituents before the opening of the ession.—lt was resolved : " That the jtter be received, and that the thanks f the Council be conveyed to Mr leGrowan for his action in the matter." The Cowell Benefit.—A letter was cad from Mr R. Hastings, Secretary f the Committee for the Cowell benet, requesting the patronage of the iouncil for the proposed entertainient. Cr Potts moved: "That the equest be granted," and said that as bis was a very deserving case he •ould like to see all the Councillors in he front seats.—Cr Scott suggested hat Cr Potts should call them together o meet at the Council Chambei's and hen " travel " to the concert.—Motion

arried. Rates.—-Mr S. Graham applied for erinission to wort'out his rates.-—Re-vest granted. Reports.—The usual reports were sceived-and adopted. Estimates. —The Mayor staged that special meeting of the Council will ? held ne?t. Thursday to consider the stimates for the ensuing year.
