The Earth Hunger.

" THANE GOD AND JOHN McKENZIE.

A southern exchange has tbe following: "There was some excitement in the Land Office, Ipvercargill, the other day, it being the day fixed for taking ballots for sections in Stewart Island and the Longwood district, lor six of which there were numerous applications. The office itself was crowded, arid the passage leading up to it blocked with people whose countenances told that they were there on business, and not out of idle curiosity. Lands in the Longwood district, near the Waiau, in Paterson district, Stewart Island, and sections in Cromarty township, near the Wilson's River diggings, were to be disposed,of, the township sections by auction, and the others by ballot. Greatest interest centered in the Waiau sectious, which offered an opening for those who intended going in for farming, ii ere there were offered, altogether, 12 allotments, 10 of which were of sufficient area for fanning purposes. An idea of the eager demand for such land ie afforded by the fact that there were 47 applicants for one section alone, while for six of them no less than 147 persons put in, an average of nearly, 25 per section, while applications tbat were informal (would have swelled the number considerably. There was a good deal of excitement during the progress of the ballot, and one successful applicant was so elated at bis good fortune that he exclaimedi ' Thank-God aud John MoKenzie, or we would never' have got the land.' Altogether, tbe depotita made with the Depart* eeuttoteUa<UUoß." ■ :
