The Wellington Assault Case

VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY AGAINST

SEEL.

[Phess Association.]

Wellington, Last night.

In Seel's case, Finlay was called for the defence, and gave similar evidence to that in the inquest, and added that he had a revolver with him during the row on the previous evening, having been in the habit of carrying it for years. Seel did not know this. He also asserted that Seel called out to him not to fire at Greenrose.

Seel also gave evidence, and protested that he did not know Finlay had a revolwer with him. Both men asserted that the shot fired at Lynch when on the wharf was in the air, a>d merely a piece of bravado to frighten him.

Messrs Hutchison and Bell addressed the jury very briefly, the former contt nding that there was no evidence to show that Finlay fired at Lynch when in conjunction with Seel, except Lynch's, and that in any case was merely to frighten him, and the charge must fall to the ground. After an hour's retirement the jury returned a verdict of "Not guilty." The remaining charges, both against Finlay and Seel, were then withdrawn.
