The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 1892.

The County Engineer, Mr J. M. McLaren, is calling for tenders for various works in our issue this evening, the chief of which is the erection of a foothridge over the Puriri creek.. Full particulars can be gathered from the advertisement. The well-known footballer Watene met with a Blight accident while playing last Saturday, which, it is feared, will prevent him taking part in the forthcoming representative match with Auckland. Me Beard left for Auckland this afternoon, having been called away, but wilt return to the Thames on Saturday evening, so that he can be consulted .as usual from Monday next until further notice. Richard Caunall appeared before Dr. Giles, E.M., at the Auckland Police Court yesterday to answer the charge laid by Mr Gleeson that he had committed wilful corrupt perjury in the testimony that he gave upon oath when he deposed that on Sunday, the 3rd July, between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock in the forenoon, the said Patrick Gleeson's youngest daughter Maggie was in the bar of the City Hotel, Hobs»n street, and sold to him half a pint of beer, for which he paid to the said Maggie Gleeson three pence. Mr Hugh Campbell appeared on behalf of the prosecutor, and asked for a remand until next Monday in order to secure the attendance of the R.M. (Mr W. H. Bishop), before whom the previous case was heard. Defendant objected to a remand on the ground that being a stranger he would have a difficulty to procure bail. Dr. Giles decided to grant a remand, and admitted defendant to bail on his owa surety of 320, I

We should hardly think that the advertisement signed W. Laurie, water race contractor, which appears in our issue this evening, can in any way be connected with any of the readers of this journal residing on Block 27. Be that, however, as it may, the parties who are guilty of the practice of appropriating to their own uses the timber intended for the repair of the water race had better cease their depredations at once, as Mr Laurie is determined they shall interview the E.M. should they persist in it.

At the meeting of the Auckland Board of Education 3 esterday Mr J. L. Kelly wrote complaining of the Board's action in disallowing his claim for expenses. Mr Kelly renewed his claim for £6 10s for expenses. Mr Muir said that as a matter of courtesy he moved the following resolution on behalf of Mr Kelly,," That the Board consider the whole question of members' travelling expenses, with a view to placing the same on a consistent and legal basis." Mr Muir stated that Mr Kelly's friends in Auckland had already subscribed half the amount of Mr Kelly's claim. Mr Muir then moved, " That the matter be referred to the legal adviser of the Board." Mr Cooper remarked that they would be guilty of an immoral breach of their trust if they paid a member's travelling expenses from Wellington and back. Mr Cooper moved, " That Mr Kelly's motion stand over till a return is compiled showing all the allowances made to members of the Board for.travelling expenses." So far from being personally antagonistic to Mr Kelly, he recognised the hardship, and was prepared to subscribe to the fund for paying his expenses. Mr Muir then withdrew his motion in favor of Mr Cooper's, which, on being put to the meeting, was carried.

As the Governor has proclaimed Thursday, 4th of August, Arbor Day, as a holiday in the public offices, the Committee of the Ohinemuri public school have decided on the same day for the schools tree planting. The school reserves at Paeroa, Karangahake, and Owharoa are now being securely fenced previous to the planting.

At yesterday's meeting of the Board of Education, a letter was received from the City Schools Committee, recommending that in the event of the Board not deeming it necessary to advertise for applications for the vacant headmastership of the Napier-street School, Mr Scott be appointed. Mr Udy moved, " That the Board advertise for applications in the local papers," Mr Luke strongly deprecated the localising of education. He moved as an amendment that the words " and the New Zealand Schoolmaster," be added to Mr Udy's motion. The amendment on being put to the meeting was lost, and Mr Udy's motion carried.
