BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tha usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Chambers last night. Present—The »(^r Andrew), Crs MoGowan, Ooinor, Price, Radford, Brown, Wood, Koafoed, and Wilson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Watsb —A letter was read from Mr Hollie, County Clerk, stating that according to the report of the County Engineer the rules as regards motive power were not being complied with, and giving details of the matter in dispute, which waa the buldirg formerly oocupied by the Turncock. —After hearing the Town Clerk's explanation the matter was left in his hands. —A letter from Mr Judd, asking for permission to use a l£«inch ' nozzle instead of a f-incb, for the plant referred to, was referred to the County Council.—The Mayor was also requested to consult with the County Chairman, and endeavor to see whether some less circuitous manner in dealing with applications for water could be devised.

Flushing Dba^Nß,—Mr J. B. Coney wrote that it would be an excellent thing if the water flowing from Mr F.- Dann's workshop was conducted partially across the street into the channel on the west side for the purpoeo of flushing it. —Referred to the General Pur« poses Committee to report. Fibe PiiTGS.—Messrs J. S. Hart and K. Thorburn wrote asking that an additional fire plug should be laid down in Pollen street, 10 as to enable their? premises to be watered in the summer weather.— Referred to the General Purpoeej Committee with power to act.

MARTE rA«£TBEE '.—Several ratepayers wrote asking that the remainder of the road in Martha street should be completed in accord' ance with a promise given some two years ago. —Referred to the General Purposes Commit* tee with power to act.

Niqbssoii. Boxes.—The following letter was read from Mr Coßey, cf Auckland, re night-soil boxes :—'• In reply to your inquiry re boxes, they vary much in size end shape throughout the city. Tho regulations of the Council eet forth that the small ones must not exceed 3 eubio feet and tho large ones 5 cubio feet, but we find that we cannot mate any boxes without firßfc measuring tha place they have to fit, bs the clocota are not made all one siz?, but inuoh as the fancy of the builder dictates. If thcro is room a box 12 inches wide asd 4't long, outside rueasurement, with a handle on the end to draw them out with, are tho handiest and bost, the ends rabbited in, end tbe seamß tarred so eb to be watertight; The Council here do not find boxes at all, but those who want them deal direct with tho contractor,"—Received.

Water roa Shipping.—A letter was received from tbe Harbor Board to Ihe effact that they considered £35 per annum a sufficient charge for the supply of water for shipping at the Burko street end Shortland wbarv?.?.—lt was decided to eclhero to the Council's original offer of £40.
