Boroug Recreation Reserve at Kauaeranga Valley.

PBOPOSAL TO BUY TARARU GARDENS.

At the meeting of the Borough Council last night the following; letter was read from Mr J. A. Miller re the Recreation Reserve at Kenteranga Talleyj —"By the 'Thames Beoreation Reserve Sale Act 1881' your Council were authorised ty sell the Recreation Ground Reserve in Kaoaeranga Creek, comprising 200 acres, part of Ohaene Slock, provided such sslo took place within five, years from passing of Act, viz., 6th November, 1884 In making survey of the land for the public •notion sale on Ist April, 1885, your surveyor included the Whangorahi Block, belonging to your Council, comprising [8 acres, but when preparing the plan the surveyor did not die* tingnish the Whangorahi "from the Ghaene Block. The Ael referred to did not empowor your Council to sell any part of Whangorahi, bat still several allotments were sold in (that block, and the purchase moneys paid through Mr Craig to your Counoil. Some of the transfers were [prepared and signed by your Counoil, but when presented to the Land Transfer Office registration was refused upon the ground that your Council had no power ■ under the Act to sell Wbangorabi Block. As there are several other of the lots in the same predicament, I think yonr Council would do well to appoint a committee to go fully info the matter, and have it put on a proper footing, I think it would be as well if the M 836 committee bad the power to consider and

report on the necessary 'steps to be taken to have the Council's power of selling the residue of the Beoreation Ground extended for a further period, if your Council is of opinion that such a course ia advisable."

The Mayor said that the begt portions had been sold. Ho thought it was advisable to hare the remainder renewed, and then consider the advisability of selling it. Cr MoGowan concurred.

In reply to a question, the Town Clerk said that there was a Bum of £190 to the credit of the Recreation Reserve account.

Cr MoQ-owan said that if the Council could sell the remainder of this reier7o, and use the proceeds and balanoo now ia band to pur* chase the Tararu Gardens, the latter would be useful to the public.

Eventually the Mayor and' Town Clerk were authorised to apply to the Governor to have the time extended.

At a subsequent staga of the proceedings Cr Brown suggested the dosirability of the Council purchasing Tararu Gardens for the purpose of recreation grounds. He said he believed the property could be purchased for some £400 or £500 on the Building Society's terms if the Council did not dears to pay the whole amount down. Tbe Tararu G&rdenß were now really tbe oalj'grounds available for such a purpose, and possessed many sdvanfcge?. Ho felt sure that wera they acquired by the Council, they would prove a great boon to tbe public. He moved that the matter of purchasing the Gardens be referred to the General Purposes Committee to report at next meeting.

The proposition was carried unanimously.
