AUCKLAND.
Yesterday. The annual meeting of the Waihi Gold
Mining Company, which was to have been held this afternoon, lapsed for want of a quorum. According to the most recent reports from the manager, the water-race and battery are in a disgraceful state, the former having settled down considerably. Only about 30 strokes per minute can be obtained from the battery instead of 70, as waß expected. We understand it to be the intention of the directors to hold some one responsible for the state of affairs. It has been suggested to send to America for a new turbine, and this will probably be done. In the meantime, all expenses will be curtailed.
The mysterious death of the young woman Sarah Emily Johnston, who was awaiting trial on a charge of concealment
of the birth of an infant at Cambridge causes intense interest. The doctor found extensive traces of arsenical poisoning, and there is no doubt whatever that this was the cause of death. Before her death Mrs Cleaver mother of (he supposed father of the child, who is a young tailor, summoned the clergyman and she was married While supported by pillows in bed, dying soon afterwards. From remarks let drop by the young woman while on her deathbed, Dr Walker ascertained the following facts which certainly would not agree very well with the theory of suicide. Deceased slated that she left Hamilton in excellent health, at Mercer she had a cup of tea, and in the evening of the day of her arrival at Auckland she had tea at Mrs Butler's, Cleaver being present. An hour or so later she went to bed, and at 10 o'clock l«st night symp» toms of stomachic irritation first became apparent. During the whole of her illness she gave no reason.to think she had taken anything deleterious and cbrorfully took the medicines prescribed for her.
