Thames Borough. Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present—Crs McGowan (in the chair), Messrs Meunie, Wilkinson, Marshall, fiawden, Osborne.

LETTBBB BEAD. From the Cricket Clab, asking the use of the asphalt roller to roll the new cricket ground at WaioKaraka flat. Application was granted on the motion of Cr Wilson. —■From Mr T. Renshaw, calling attention to the defective state of the Baillie street water table, near the Baptist Church.— From Captain Souter, stating that he would replace the rails in Bella andCoromandel streets as soon as the Shortland contract was finished.—From the Secretary to Board of Education, stating that the Board had approved of the supplementary list of books for the Thames Public Library.—From tbe lessee of the Goods Wharf water supply, calling attention to the rotten state of tbe hose at present in use. It was decided to procure 60 feet of new canvass hose, the same to be kept to satisfaction of the Turncock. THE BAILWAY.

The Town Clerk read a telegram from Mr Speight stating that a Railway Construction Bill had been introduced with the object of getting the £15,000 vote spent on a line between Hamilton and Cambridge. Cr Marshall moved that Crs Wilkinson, McGowan, and the Town Clerk communicate with the Government in the strongest possible manner. Cr Mennie seconded.

Cr Bawden thought a public meeting should be held.

On the suggestion of Cr Wilkinson, Cr Marshall added to his motion "That the committee be empowered to assist in getting.up a public meeting if necessary."

the motion was carried. BEPOBT BE FIBE BRIGADE EXPENDITURE

The report of the committee appointed to investigate several items of supposed unauthorised expenditure on behalf of the Fire Brigades was read and adopted. It referred to the cost of a hydrant which should not have been paid for by the Borough. In reference to the Shortland drying reel, although its erec'ion was not authorised, it was very much required, and it was recommended to pay for its cost, not to exceed £7 10s.

MACKAY STBEBT DBAINAGB. , The Foreman of Works reported re the defective drainage of the allotments in Mackay street, between Richmond and Sealey streets, that the most effective way to remedy the evil would be the residents filling up their allotments. A few loads of grave 1 was ordered to be placed npon the footpaths. The report of the turncock, re Mr Gidleigh, was postponed for consideration till next meeting, pending further inquiry.

BETUBN OF FIBE BRIGADE EXPENDITURE.

The following return was laid on the table :—Grahamstown : Salaries £61 ss; gas, £12 8s; uniforms, £32 6s; machinery and repairs, £6 2s 3d; horse' hire, 15s; refreshments at fires, £6 8s 4d; total, £119 4* 7d. Shortland: Salaries, £45 15s; gas, £14 3s6d; uniforms, £16 15s 9d; machinery and repairs, £4 lls 6d; timber, £91756 d; refreshment at fires, £6 8s 4d ; total, £97 lls 7d. Accounts unpaid, viz.: A. and G. Price, £7 13s; C. Curtis, £2; C. Gentry, £7 10s; goods authorised, but accounts not yet rendered : uniforms Shortland Brigade, about £40. —Total, £280 4s 2d.

On the motion of Cr Osborne the return was ordered to lie on the table till next meeting.

PAH AXT STBEJST CBOSSING.

A letter was received from the Public Works Department stating that the Minister could not reconsider the matter of the Pahau street railway crossing. This concluded the business.
