Thames Borough Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Crs Wilkinson, Bawden, Wilson, Marshall, Graham, Mennie, Osborne, McGowan.

CHABITABLE AID.

The City Council of Christchurch wrote stating in their opinion all Charitable Institutions should be provided for out of the consolidated' revenue, and that they did not see any reason to alter their decision.

The Town Clerk said that the Auckland City Council were moving in an opposite direction to what they were. The Auckland Council thought all out districts should contribute towards the support of a central institution and hospital, and Mr Speight had stated he would have to support his constituents in this matter. After some discussion, Council decided to send to each provincial member a copy

of the report of the local Charitable Aid. Committee ou the Charitable Institution's Bill. OWEN BTBEET. A letter was received from Mr Forsaith drawing attention to the inefficient state of Owen street crossing near Mr Short's shop. Referred to Works Committee. DEFECTIVE CULVEBT. A letter was read from Mr J. Brien asking Council to repair the drain at corner of Sealey and Mackay -street!. Referred to Works' Committee. MART BTEEET. Mr J. J. O'Brien wrote stating that he never promised to lay gravel on the town portiou of Mary street as stated by the Foreman of Works. , . The Town Clerk explained that the letter before the Council was in reply to one sent by him to Mr O'Brien asking that gentleman to fulfil a promise made to the Foreman of Works in return for some stone from the Karaka Creek, which he borrowed. Referred to Works Com. mittee. SEBASTOFOL HOUSE. A letter was read from Messrs J. Thompson and R. Farrell, stating that after inspecting Sebastopol House thej were of opinion that it was not dangerous. They thought the verandah was unsafe. It was resolved to send a copy of tbpto letter to the owners of the property, wit? a request that the verandah be removed. TABABU FOOTPATH. The Works Committee were empowered to act in the matter of the Tararu road footpath between Poulgrain's and Climo's, the same having been drawn attention to by the Tararu School Committee. ASPHALT. It was decided to inform the Mary street residents that the asphalting of their footpath would be proceeded with as soon as the weather permitted. WATEB SUPPLY MATTES. A telegram was read from Mr W. J. Speight, M.H.R.. stating that the Attorney-General wanted the Council to obtain the conseut of T. and S. Morrin, as helders of the Water Supply debentures, to transference of liabilities to the Borough.—Messrs Morrin had stated they would be willing to accept the Borough as their debtors.—A .telegram.was also read from the Atiorney-General anent the Thames Water Supply Bill, which he was about to introduce. —Orderedto be complied with. SAILWAY CBOSSIRG. A number of Amy street residents wrote promising to contribute towards the construction of a railway crossing in that locality. The Foreman said this would cost £45. It was decided to apply for leave to use the batter of the embankment for the crossing, the work to be proceeded with if this concession could be obtained. TABABU. A petition was read from a number of Tararu residents praying the Council to construct a good footpath in their locality. After some discussion it was resolved to refer the matter to the Works Committee with power to act. NEXT YEARS' WOBKS. The annual schedule of probable income and proposed expenditure was read' over, and a long discussion ensued, the * result being the amendment' of the ?sehedale as per advertisement. BEPOBTS. Reports of the Foreman of Work*, Beturoing and: HealtbrOfllcerr were read over and adopted. POUNDXEKPBB. Mrs Gubb was appointed pound-keeper at a salary of £20 per annum. - SEDUCTION OF EXPENSBS. Some discussion ensusd on Cr Marshall's motion concerning the reduction of expenses, but nothing tangible resulted, the matter being finally relegated to the Works Committee. . BATES. Cr Mennie gave notice of motion that at next meeting he would move that the library, water, and general rates be struck. „ ELBCTOBAL BOLL. A committee consisting of , Crs McGowan and Wilkinton were appointed to consider the best means of f securing the addition of names to the electoral roll.
