Yesterday. The Evening Post subscriptions in aid of the Irish Distress Fund reached over £200. The Supreme Court was engaged all day heariug the actioii brought by the trustees of the late Captain. Head of Poverty Bay against W. L. Rees, claiming £10,000 for slander of title. Foul Play was yesterday backed to win the Wellington Cup at 5 to 1. The price has now shortened to 4 to 1. The Committee of the IjjTew Zealand Eifle Association met this evening and made final arrangements for the Nelson meeting, commencing on Monday, Ist March. Armourer Christie, leaves for Nelson next week to prepare the range and camp. The Union SteanT Company have agreed to convey members of the Association to and from Nelson at 30 per cent off the two single fares, being the same rate as was charged last year. Entries have to be made to' the secretary .before the 14th proximo. This day. Henry Anderson, the editor, retires from the partnership of the Chronicle, a partnership arbitration being held prior to his retirement. A fire broke out in a store attached to the Waihonga Hotel yesterday, which wa9 completely destroyed, as was also the stock ; loss about £300. OAMAKU. Yesterday.
