We call attention <o the alteration in the time table of the Kot^muhana. The steamer will leave tbe Thames at 9 o'clock on Friday and Saturday morning, and Auckland at 4 o'clock on Friday afternoon.

The adjourned meeting of the committee of the Irish Famine Fund was held at the Hibernian Wall last evening. The Mayor occupied the chair, and called on the canvassers to hand in their lists. This was done .as follows:—Messrs Speight, Twohil, Mcllhone and Landers (South Ward), £32 5s 6d ; Messrs E. McDonnell, Mahoney and Cloonan (Middle Ward), £70 14s 6d; Messrs McCulloueh and Sjmingtoa (North Ward), £11 11s 6d; Messrs Walsh, Noonan and Foy (Block 27), £13 19s 6d ; Messrs Roach and Grogan (Moanatairi), £11 Is 6d ; Messrs Byrne and Mclntyre | (Waiotahi), £12 los; Messrs Hewson and Grannity (Hape), £2 19s 6d ; making a total of £155 7s. It was resolved that the Mayor be empowered to send a first remittance of £150 to the Lord Mayor of Dublin. - It was rumored yesterday afternoon that the directors of the Caledonian intended purchasing from Mr Howe his interest in the Caledonian mine, and consequently a demand for shares set in, buyers offering 17s 6i for them. Me Howe has had offered to him the Tookey and Golden Crown mines, for the sum of £2200, and it is probable that he will buy these properties at the price asked, in order to amalgamate them with the Caledonian mine, and so form one good company. Me John Bull, officer .in charge of the Telegraph Department was presented to day with a gold signet riug, as a mark of respect and esteem, by the operators of the Grahamstown station. The fire-bells disturbed the quiet of the early morning, and soon the members of the fire brigades were at the scene of the fire, which was in'Shortland. The fish curing hut of Mr Bottomore was found to be on fire, but not being a large structure the flames were quickiy extinguished.

A capital programme appears [in our columns for the concert iv aid of the Catholic Boys' School, to be held in the Academy of Music this evening. Seywal young ladies from Auckland have come down for the purpose of taking part in tiie programme, and our well known i hames amateurs also have given their services. At a meeting of the Thames Eifle Bangers last eight a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of having the company represented at the forthcoming Rifle Association meeting at Nelson, and it was decided that a competition should take place on Friday and Saturday next to decide who should go. Majob Withers will inspect the Thames J Volunteers ou Saturday next at 6 p.m., opposite the old Thames School. J Ik view of the changes bein£ made iv several of the wardenships of the West Coast, we hear there is some probability of our respected fellow-townsman A. J. Allorn, Esq., being offered a Wardenship. We are empowered to state authoritatively that when Sir George Grey comes to the Thames at the beginning of the month he will not be accompanied by Mr Sheeban, the business arrangements of that gentlemen precluding him from so early addressing his constituents. Mr Sheehan will, however, be in our midst in the course of a few we3ks, when we may expect to hear his views on the political position. As would be seen from our telegrams yesterday, he has gone into partnership with Messrs Whitaker and Gnue |n some land transaction. Quite a discovery in the treatment of j diphtheria has been made in Few York. ' A young man, whose arm had been amputated was attacked by diphtheria before healing took place, and instead of the matter incident to that disease being deposited in the throat, the greater portion appeared on the wounded arm, and the diphtheria was very light aud easily managed. Dr Davis profited by this, and in the next case of diphtheria blistered his patient's chest, and on this blistered part the chief deposit appeared. This was also an easy ease of the disease. The theory of Dr Davis is that diphtheria usually appears in the throat because of the thinness of the lining of the throat. Hence, when the blister breaks the skin upon any other, part of the body, the disease appears there.. ;
