Thames Scottish Anniversary Celebration.

One of the most successful and entertaining reunions ifc lias been our pleasure to attend for some time past, took place at the Academy of Music last evening in the shape of the anniversary celebration of the Thames Scottish Tolunteers. The affair had been somewhat hastily got up, but an energetic committee having charge of. the preliminary arrangements,, the enjoyments of the evening was not affected by the short time allowed for preparation. There were 300 or 400 persons present, a large proportion of the male sex being clad in the dashing uniforms of our local volunteer corps—the scarlet, -of course, largely predominating. The first portion of the entertainment consisted of a concert. After a brilliant opening overture by the fine band of the corps, Lieut. Coney came forward and sang a song which was heartily applauded. The did favorite Mrs Payne delighted the audience with one of her beautiful ballads. An encore was demanded, but that pleasure had to be foregone, as it had been decided in view of the dancing afterwards that no encores would bo giveu. Vol. Grey caused considerable amusement in reading the celebrated " Broother Thara's Letter," ala .Dundreary. Mr .Robinson and Mrs Kilgour followed with songs, after which Vol. Buttle displayed rare elocutionary ability in the recitation of a selection from Scott's " Marmion." Vol. C. Hudson whose first appearance in public it was, sang very creditably. Miss Probert's singing was, as it usually is, well received. The song she rendered last night as entitled " You'd better bide a wee." The programme of vocal music concluded with songs by Mr Pulliene and Vol. Wright. An interesting feature of the evening was the presentation to Vol. Emerson, who is leaving the district. Mojor _ Murray made ths presentation, addressing a frw complimentary remarks to the recipients who briefly returned thanks. The floor was then cleared for danciug, which was kept up till the small hours of this morning. The music was supplied by the company's brass band and Christiansen's siring band. We must not forget to give a word of praise to Mr Forgic for his really excellent catering.
