OHINEMURI.

(fbom oub own cobbespondent.)

Paeboa, February 25.

Major Murray, Messrs Ehrenfried, Carrick, Hennelly and other gentlemen, accompanied by a party ot ladies, came up on horseback from the Thames this afternoon. They were met by a number of Paeroa residents, and a very pleasant dancing party was held in the PubliU Hall this evening. Miss Belcher and Sergeant Russell officiated at the piano, and Messrs Dewar and Marshall played the yiolin! The party'broke up early as several of the gentlemen wished to make an early start so as to reach the Thames in time for business to-morrow morning. Mr Ehrenfried thanked Sergt. Russell for his services, and said that having ■pent stich a pleasant evening would be an inducement to come up again. Sergeant Russell responded, and said that he would be happy at any future time to assist to the best of his ability.

The Ohinemuri District School Committee have recorded their votes in favor ; of Messrs J. M. Clark, P. R. Claude and _y. Peacock for election to the Board of "•■Blclucation.> '«'.," - The No. 3 Company Thames Scottish Volunteers, which was lately formed, held their first parade on Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad, and men living at a distance were unable to attend. Sergeant Collins is doing his best to get the raw recruits into shape, and is ready to drill those able to attend every evening. Major Murray has promised to make an inspection shortly. 'V'tVe'are. glad to learn that the bridge over the Ohinemuri River, is so far advanced that the tenders have been opened,. Of course we are thankful for ■mall mercies, but we should have preferred to hear that the contract bonds had been signed, sealed* and delivered. The contractor could then have gone on with the preliminary work, and there would still have been ample time afforded to complete negotiations with the natives. Our anniversary day (3rd March) is drawing nigh, and people here would have been very much pleased if arrangements were made to celebrate the occasion by driving a pile, or in some other way starting the permanent work of construction. One gentleman considered that it would be difficult to catch a member of the Cabinet to grace the ceremony, but the difficulty was overcome by another who suggested that, in default of a. "member" of the Cabinet, we might invite a " cabinet-maker" from the Thames to do the needful. The St. Patrick's Day Race Committee have started vigorously to work, and intend to make the meeting a success They have already guaranteed a £25 prize for a race open to all-comers, and we expect to, see some good horses entered. I would suggest to the bankers, brokers, and others on the Thames, that: a very pleasant excursion could be arranged as iollows :—Leave Grahamstown wharf by steamers at 1 p.m. (after the banks close) on Saturday, the 15th March ; 'sleep at Paeroa; take horses on Sunday morning for Te Aroha Hot Springs and Surrounding district; return to Paeroa in the evening; fee <he races on the following day (Monday, 17th' March), and leave Paeroa by steamer the same evening at—say five p.m., getting home in good time, so as to be able to resume business on the Tuesday morning "like giants refreshed." To those able to afford it, I think the idea is worth consideration. The steamboat proprietors should make arrangements so as to suit the excursionists. •■•■'; ■■■ ■ *
