CAPITAL, LABOR, AND THE KARAKA TUNNEL.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) 'Sib, —A man without thought about that which most concerns him, -namely, how he is to exist, is a libel on the intelligence derived from God, a reproach to his fellow men, and an idiot to himself. Self-help writing in this strain points out to the toilers that by their own exertions; only era they .hope to share in the profits *of any undertaking. I have ever held to the belief that capital was the truest friend to the working classes: that belief has been rudely shaken of late when I see capital forcing the masses, with the exception of the Erglirh worker, into Kearneyites, Socialists* and Communists; employing the cheapest labor. Chinese leaving their own people to starve. The Celt and the Teuton and other lices believe in Governments assist* ing them, think that one man can'elevate them. The English working man ridicules the idea; in the depths of his inner consciousness he knows he cannot be made happy and prosperous by Act of Parliament. Therefore he will nqver become a Commcnisi; the central figure is wanting; the belief in one man's power he laughs at. Shakespeare does the same with the three-hooped pot that Jack Cade is so so liberal with. Sir, if this community wish to be elevated they must elevate themselves, and the Karaka Tunnel is one of the levers which must be used in the operation. Subject to existing rights is the Government grant for the ground ceded. Now, what are these rights ? Mr Brown's excessive modesty and shyness prevented him from telling me at the public meeting how many men he employed on his licensed holding, so I set,to work to find out what these rights were, and this is the result in two instances : Date of application, May- 25th. —" Titania," 40 men's ground. " Hero," June 4th, 27 men's ground. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that's the ticket—67 men's ground, and not a man working on it. Sir, if that is a right, pray tell me what a wrong is.—l ami &c, G. A. Bbddish.
