OLD SI TALKS OF THE TELEPHONE.
Old Si heard something about, the telephone, and endeavoured to enlighten his friends:
"Now,'de convenshuns of man is wonderful."
" What ay' de new improobment dat de fokes is laboring onder now ? " queried Pete.
" Well, yer's heerd tell ob de tellergraf what runs on de wiah from.pole ter pole an' talks by de tip tap moshun ? " " I'se seed dat."
" Den agin yer's heerd ob de fournogryfy dat jess obertypes what de speeker ■ays on de spot by de congregashun ob de fust prmserpulls, which ar' de pothooks an' rafters ob de writin' book ! "
" Oh, yas, dats preockerpied my 'tention, too!"
" Well, dis heah tellerphone jess lays ober dem all wuss dan totin' water ter de elemphant fer er a free pass do ober crawling in onder de karivass!"
" An' what kin de tellerphone do dat ar' so solid ? "
11 W'y, yer jess goes 'long ah' sees er sorter young woodin dinnah bell —yer picks hit up,, talks in do big eend, de voice transcommitß hitself 'long de wiah, an' de fokes in de next state heahs what yer says jess same ez ef dey wuz in de edjinin' room wid de doah open !" " Aw, go way ! You's talkin' ez ef yer thought we niggers los all our gumpshun i"
" Hit's er bo'n fact—hope ter die ef taint! Dar ain't no hoodoo 'bout dis bizness ! "
"Look hear, old man, you wants ter go home an' hang er hoss-shoo ober yo' ears ter keep der witches from roostin' in 'em!"
"Dats allus de way wid you niggers— nuffio' ain't'nebber done fer yer dat yer don't try to go back on hit ? " " How ar' dat ? "
"Kase dis heah tellerfone ar' de prime 'spensashiin ob Providence fer de inclusive benefit ob. de culled race. Whar's de use .of han' writin' ? Whar's de needcessity ob sckoels an' unervarsities? Whar's de vantipes ob high-tone edicashun, when enny kinder nigger kin jess holler in de tellerphone, agitate de wiah, and talk biznesa wid enny ob de fokes outer town ? Dats what I wants ter kno' fum de 'sembly !"
The telephone was unanimously endorsed. ;
