An attempt was made this evening to blow up the sunken hulk Jili Whitney, which was cut down by the s.s. Taupo some months ago. The hulk lies about two hundred yards from the end of the Queen's wharf in thirty feet of water. A cberge of twenty pounds of dynamite was used, which was set off by electricity from a battery supplied by the Telegraph Department, i'here was a sharp report, a few pieceT of limber came to the surface, and the mainmast canted to an angle. There was very little commotion in the water, but the shock was felt at the end of the pier. The Wesleyan Conference continued its sitting to-day. The Eev. W. Morley was re-appointed editor of the New Zealand Wesieyan, and the Eev. T. Buddie principal of the college. It was resolved to float a connexional fire insurance company, with a guarantee fund of not less than £3,C00. A fifth candidate for the ministry has been received, and three ministers have been sent for from Victoria and two from Kngland. It was decided to hold the next conference at Auckland. This day. The Eatavia Superintendent of the Eastern Extension Company has telegraphed that the Singapore-Batavia cable worked badly for some days prior to total interruption. The repairing ship Edingburgh was on her way from Rangoon to Singapore, but communication will probably be restored in about a week. Steamers arrive at Batavia from Singapore on the 3rd, 6th, 17th, and 20th February, but many local steamers are sure to arrive between these days.
