DUNEDIN.
Tuesday.
The J..C. Spring Meeting came off today. This was the first fine day, after ten days of incessant rain. The morning broke beautifully. The sun, which had not been seen for a week, shone out brightly, and a cool north-east breeze made the weather lovely. For pleasure-seekers the day is a general holiday, and the bulk of the people attended the races. The course is in splendid order. The first event on the programme was a Maiden Plate of 40 soys; one mile and a quarter. Eight entered, and seven came to the post. Pakeha was scratched. Blue Peter and Steamer stood best in the betting. A good start wa3 made, but after going a quarter of a mile, the Steamer and Peter went ahead, the rest trailing off. Coming up the straight the second time, Steamer pushed ahead, and passed Peter SO yards from the post, winning by half a length. Miss Morris, Mischief, Blair Athol, Miss Alfred, and Yeoman also ran. Time, 2min I7sec.
St. Andrew's Handicap, 100 soys. and a sweepstakes of 3 soys; distance, one
mile and throe - quarters:— Mr D. O'Brien's Tambourini, 9st 51b, 1; Mr Yeend's King Philip, Bst, 2; Mr Paterson's Pertrobe, 7st 81b, 3. Betting 2to 1 on Tambourini, 2 to 1 against King Philip, 3 to 1 against Pertrobe and Kathleen, <t to 1 against .Celceno. There was a good start. Pertrobe took the lead, and kept for the first half-mile. Coming up the straight for the first time the lot closed, and passed the post in a ruck. Then Tarn shot ahead, with King Philip close on his quarters, Pertrobe being third* This order was maintained till the second time coming up the straight, when Kiiig Philip challenged Tarn, and a splendid race ensued, both flogging. After an exciting neck and-neck race O'Brien landed Tarn, the winner, by a head, King second, and Pertrobe third. Time : 3min 29£ sec.
1 The Selling Eace was won by Euclid, hands down. Time: 3min 5 sec. The Spring Handicap of 50 soys ; 1 mile and a quarter; the winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap to carry 71bs extra : A. Smith's Wee Lad, 7st Ist; H. Yeend'a Kory O'More 2nd : Paterson'i Blue Peter 3rd. After a lot of false starts the lot got away on even terms ; Blue Peter and Wee Lad were to the front. All through Eory O'More made an effort of the distance, but waited too long. Time: 2mih 22-|sec. There was half-an-hour's delay at the post. The betting was even on Eory, and 3t02 on Wee Lad.
