SIR GEORGE GREY AND NATIVE AFFAIES.

- (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—A.few days ago Dr Kilgour favored us, per Advertiser, with his views on general jjolitics, native affairs in particular.. His idea appears to be we must have Abolition,, but follow Sir G. Grey's lead in native- matters. Now any one who is not a new, chum must know that Sir, G. Grey is the father of the present native policy. . To the success of the like policy with the Kaffirs be owed his second appointment to New" Zealand, arid that policy he persisted in carrying out contrary to the expressed wishes of the people of the Province of Auckland. I am not aware that he at any time has expressed himself averse to that department. He won't .do it by one of his own pets, although in the last ten years it has cost as much as would have ihade a railway from Auckland to Wellington.. The land buying transactions which Sir George Grey has been poking at are another affair ; his motives in those things are not altogether ■o purely disinterested as some people say/ According to what others say one or other of the knd agents, acted as interpreter to General Cameron, which anyone who recollects the proceedings nine or ten years ago, such as the presentation to General Cameron, Sec, &c, can very well understand; In the event of separation, will the South agree to pay the same to native expenditure as at present ? If not we shall lose by it; that is, if native expenses amount to half the total revenue of the North Island, we shall lose half of that, of 25 per cent, on the whole revenue; but it is not likely the South will agree to pay without being allowed to have their say. One word on American Indian affairs. When the American Government want land, if the Indians won't give it up peaceably, they take it; ditto the Canadian Government. At least that was so twenty years ago. Henry Chabnly. Thames, Nov. 19th, 1875.
