RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY,
(Before Major Keddell, E.M.) DETJNKENNESS.
Edward Wright was charged with being drunk and incapable in Albert street, Grahamstown, on the 18th instant.
Defendant, who was on bail, did not appear, and forfeited the amount of his bail.
LABCENY,
Joseph Hayes was charged that he did feloniously steal, take, and carry away one pocket book containing the sum of £3 8s 3d the property of James McLoud.
Defendent pleaded guilty,
A previous conviction for larceny was put in against him, and another for breach of the peace. The present offence was robbing from the person while prosecutor was the worse for liquor. Sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor (extreme penalty) in Auckland gaol.
ASSAULT.
James Forgie was charged that he did on the 15th instant unlawfully assault and beat one John Gracie.
Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr Brassey 'appeared for complainant, and stated the facts of the case, from which it appeared that complainant and defendant had met, and during a conversation with reference to proceedings in the Bakers' Association complainant said something. Defendant then said that if he said that again he would hit him. Complainant did say it again, and. defendant struck him.
Defendant said he had been informed by his apprentices that complainant had made himself very officious in the Bakers' Association, and had tried to induce these apprentices not to commence work at the time he required them. He met complainant, and in the course of a conversation told him to mind his own business, Complainant said he (defendant) had belonged to the Bakers' Association himself at one time, and had left it dishonorably. He (witness) replied that if he repeated that charge he would strike him, as he would not allow any one to say he was dishonorable. Complainant did say it again, when he (defendant) struck him.
Pined 20s, and costs £1 17s 6d, making the tine £2 17s 6d.
The Court adjourned.
