MACKAYTOWN*

Sep. 28th, 12 noon.

There was an exciting race yesterday between the Pearl and Transit. The Pearl left Grahams town wharf 10 minutes before the Transit—the latter passed her at Puriri. Both called in at Gibbons' wharf between there and Hikutaia. While the Transit was backing out the skipper of the Pearl shot up alongside, landed cargo and passed on ahead so cleverly and smartly as to produce the greatest laughter and amusement to all the passengers at the expense of the opposition skipper. The Pearl then kept ahead till arrival at Hikutaia, where—while landing more cargo—the Transit got ahead and arrived at Paeroa 20 minutes before her.

Messrs. Gibbons, Souter, Darrow, Porter and the immortal Harry Bawden have gone to the noted Karangahake Hill to examine the reefs there with the view of erecting machinery.Excellent prospects are being found in the creek between the Karangahake and Waitekauri, but reefs aFe not yet dis« covered. Great hopes are held that ft rich reef will soon be found in the locality. About 50 men are prospecting. An almost level track has: been foun<| between Mackaytown and tfoe Waitekauri mill site, length about seven miles. It ig to be immediately oleared for foot passengers and more than, half of it will form the best and shortest route to Taurangt, avoiding the mountainous country about the gorge.

Erection of Waitekauri, Mill going on apace. Bed plates for stampers, consist* ing of three pieces of timber, each 44, feet long by 2 feet square, equal to 6,300 feet, are ready to be placed in position. : It is to be hoped that the Government will give their early attention to the formation of the road to there, so that the' enterprising owners will get the machinery without delay. • ;''..; Agricultural • settlers at Botokoh,u hare commenced planting potatoes.
