RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

(Before Jackson Keddell, Esq., R.M.) A BATCH OF DBtTNKABDS. Samuel, a Maori, was charged with having been drunk and incapable in Pollen street, Shortland, on the 18th inst. Defendant admitted the offence, which being the first, was considered to be met with a fine of 5s and costs. ' Michael Mullins, alias Barrett, was charged with being drunk and disorderly in G-rey street, Shortland. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Handy proved to having cautioned the prisoner for using bad language. Detective Brennan corroborated, and gave prisoner a generally bad character. Constable Louis received charge of prisoner from Inspector Bullen yesterday morning, when he was drunk. He was locked up. Sergeant Elliot deposed that defendant was disorderly yesterday morning in Grahamstown, when he (witness) advised him to go home. He said he would, but subsequently he was drunk and disorderly on the streets of Shortland. Pefendant said he w^Mlrunk on Saturday night, but not yesterday, and Constable Handy called him a monkey. A fine of 20s, or 48 hours' imprisonment, was inflicted. Stephen Farrelly pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and incapable in the street yesterday morning, and he was fined 10s and costs. The Court adjourned.
