WELLINGTON.
Saturday. Auckland Football Team Defeated. The Football Match Auckland v. Weilington, began at 230 this afternoon, Wellington winning by 16 points. Score —Wellington, 8 ruses, equal to 4 points ; 3 tries, equal to 6; 1 goal, equal to 6; total, '16 points. Auckland : 2 ruses, equal to 1 point. Campbell, of Wellington, kicked three' times for try at goal, but only succeded once. The Auckland team appeared to be completely overmatched, both in weight aud play. Wellington's drop kicking was remarkably good. The Auckland team will be entertained at dinner this evening, and leave early to-morrow: morning for. the South per Hawea. This day. Serious Accident from Gas Explosion. A very serious explosion of gas took place this morning in the strong room of Messrs Izard and Bell's office. On one side, the wall, 18 inches thick, was blown out. The other side and roof were badly cracked. It appears a clerk named Salmon, in the office, having occasion to visit the strong room, smelt gas. He left the door open for half an hour to allow it to escape. He then returned, struck a match, and was about to light the burner, when the whole escape of gas in the strong room ignited. The shock threw the clerk some 12 feet out into the passage, seriously injuring him. He wa» taken to the hospital.
