THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.

"A meetinj^of the Borough Council was held in thej| Council Chambers yesterday evcningjat 7 o'clock. Present: His Worship the 5 Mayor, Councillors Ehrenfried, Kenshaw, Macnab, Butt, Gibbons and Wilson. Ihc usual declaration was taken by Messrs Butt, Gibbons and Wilson, after which the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clerk said the only letters of importance sent were the permission gi^en_to Mr Daniels to proceed with his battery, and the notices sent to Messrs Gudgeon and Craig. WAIO-KABAKA 'ROAD.'

A letter was read from the City of London (J.M.C. siating they declined to say what sum they would Rive towards | the maintenance of the Waio-Karaka Road, but offering £15 for the present repairs. The Queen of the May G.M.C. offered a liie sum. The City of -York declined to contribute anything. In to the Mayor, M r llawdon said the cost of-tke. repairs would be about, £75. A letter was read from Mr A my calling attention to the dangerous slate of ihe wooden causeway over the footpath opposite the Imperial Hotel. The Mayor said he had seen the place referred to, and there was no danger. : COLLINS-STBEET. A letter was read from James Clark complaining o f the state of the road. Relegated to the Works Committee. WATER SUPPLY PIPES.

A letter-was read from Mr William Fagg requesting the .Council not to monopolise the making of connections with the main pipe by joining the supply pipes themselves, as it would be very injurious to the trade if they were to do so. The Mayor said that the main pipe was only a four-inch one, arid hence* they were obliged to be very careful how the pipe was tampered with. After considerable discussion it was resolved that the Works Committee should inspect the pipes and report on the matter. BIRD IN HAND HILTO. A requisition signed by twenty inhabitants of the Hill was read requesting that a road be made over the Hill. He ferred to the Works Committee to report on. MONEY KEFUWDED. .' A letter was read from Mr V. E. Pice stating that the sum of £300 was now placed to the Borough's credit refunded to them for the maintenance of the Tararu Koad. TARAfiIT KOAD. A letter was read informing the Council that the culvert across the Tararu road was stopped up by debris, a.nd unless attended to. serious inconvenience might result. Resolved that it be attended to forthwith. NOTICE OF BUILDING, &.C.

A notice of building a furnace was read from Johu Foss, butcher, Owen street; also the letter of the Borough Engineer on the subject. • ' The Town Clerk said he should like-to know how the expenses were to be paid to the engineer for seeing these buildings properly constructed —in some cases there would be heavy expenses. He read a letter frotn Messrs Spencer and Hall stating their intention to erect a blast furnace for the purpose of smelting iron sand on their premi-es; the Kngineer!s report theri on was to the effect that if the furnace was built a chimney to the. height of 45 feet must be erected. Cr Gibbons explained that he believed, it was not intended to use the furnace save for the purpose of experiment, and the Mayor, with Messrs Gibbons and Een*haw, were appointed to see into these two notices as well as one send in by Messrs Mennie and Dey. "WATEE SUPPLY. The following letter was read from the Highway Boards re their share in the management of the Thames wafer supply:—""Thames, September 6, 1875. To the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Thames. Gentlemen,—ln accordance with your request we have the honour to submit, for the consideration of your Council, the following proposils re the water supply manngement. 1. That the entire management of the water supply shall be handed over to a committee, consisting of the Mayor, three members of the Borough Council, one member of the Parawai Board, one member of the Kauaeranga Board, and one member of the Waiotahi Board. 2. That the amount of the general rate (not exceeding one shilling in the pound on the annual value) struck in the borough and in each district shall be £he basis for calculating the basis of profits pro rata, and that the current "year's rates may be taken as the basis for the first division of profits. 3. That all moneys shall be placed to the credit of such committee in a bank account opened and kept for that purpose, and to be drawn on by such committee. 4 That the periods at which the j profitg are to be divided shall be fixed by the committee.—Alexander Beodib, Waiotahi Board; R. S,cott, ICauaeranga Board; J.A Milleb, Parawai Board." Cr. Kenshaw moved, "That in the opinion of the Council, the basis of representation on tho management and divisions of profits should be pro rata on the I amount of general rates levied in the borough and in the various Highway j Boards for the current year." Carried. PAHATVAI KATES. Th« town clerk informed the Council that the Parawai Board had levied a rate to the amount of £40 against them, on account of the Water ifeservoir, &c, and Wilson's paddocks, the whole property being jralued at £800. TABABU TRAMWAY. A copy of the deed under which the { tramway was naade was read, showing thai after 10 years the tramway became j the prqgerfiy of tho Borough Council. i whson's paddocks.. A petition from the inhabitants of the district was read, praying the Council not to utilize Wilson s paddooks as a burial ground. CHUBCH MISSION LAND. The Town Clerk informed the Council that, the Church Mission Trustees had received an offer for some land on each side of the water course, 25 acres in all, and if the Borough. Council wished to purchase it at £10 an acre, they could. . The matter was ordered to be referred to the Water Committee. WORKS COMMITTEE'S BEPOHX. The report of the Works Committee re Kuranui Creek, horse and dray, Mr Wilkinson's account, and McCabe's rates was read, received and adopted. KABAKA EOAD. . The Mayor said the culvert in the Karaka road was broken through, rendering the road very dangerous. Mr Pawdon said one accident had already happened, as half the footpath had been carried away. Resolved, that the Foreman of Works be instructed to see to the matter at once. • . MABY-STBKET. Cr Macnab drew attention to fhe fact that repairs were urgently needed in Mary-street. The urgency was admitted by all, and it was relegated to the.Works Committee with instructions to act. The repairs -were estimated at £40. COUNCIL CHAMBEBS. The Mayor drew attention to the bad state of the Chambers, which were far from water-tight. The landlord said he could do nothing to remedy the matter unless the rent paid was raised from £1 to £1 5s a week. Cr Butt considered the Chambers badly situated. Matter "left to the Works Committee.

PAT-SHEET. The pay-sheet for the last fortnight amounted to £57 18s 6d. Passed for payment. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. The following Committees were appointed :— Public Works Committee. — The Mayor, Crs Wilson and Anthony. Water Supply.-I—The Mayor, Crs Macnab, Gibbons and Rowe. Fire Brigade.—The Mayor,. Crs Wilson, Khrenfried and Kenshaw. Cemetery.—The Mayor, Crs Butt and Kenshaw. Finance.—The Mayor, Crs Gibbons, Ehrenfried and Kenshaw. All Committees were appointed for 12 months excepting" the Works Committee, one member of which retires every three months. Cr Ehrenfried drew attention to the disgraceful state of the road between the Manukau and Herald batteries. Keso'.ved that the Works Committee be instructed to take action in the matter.
