Election Notices > TO THE BURGESSES OP THE '. BOROUGH OP THAMES. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN—As eer- ! fain persons have spread a report that ; I am going to withdraw from the contest at the forthcoming Election, I beg to state that such allegations are entirely without foundation. JY A. PtJIIjEINE. Grahainstown, September 4tb, 1875. P.S.—The other candidates having ignored the Lady Voters altogether, I beg to solicit their support, as I feel confident that they will play an important part in the future destinies of the Borough. 1029 TO THE BURGESSES OP THAMES. p ENTLEMEN,—In offering myself as a *~t ' candidate for election to the office of Councillor, I consider it due to the ratepayers to state ray views on matters that may come be/ore the Council. The changes likely to rosult from the present Abolition measures before the. Assembly will undoubtedly giro extended powers to our Municipal and Local Boards; and it bebpves us to elect men who are not likely to be influenced by personal or other motives ari-ing from their connection vrih interests centred in Auckland. I am in favour of borrowing on the security of the foreshore for Municipal works, and using all proper efforts for Hie purpose of connecting the Waikato and other producing districts with the Thames. I believe the Council should use their united influence to connf ct Tai'rua, Puriri, and other townships' with the Thames by means of good dray roads in preference to mere tracks and cuttings. I am opposed to the present law which deprives a Burgess of his vote because his rates are not paid by a certain date. So Jong as the Council accepts the rate a man's right to vote should be sacred. I am not in favour of the present rule or by-law which requires a ratepuyer to form or assist in forming the footpath opposite his premises. With reference to official expenses, I am not an advocate of cheap service, I consider that an efficient officer should.be well paid. These, gentlemen, are a few of my views on theee matters, and if you think Tararu and Grahamstown sufficiently represented—to put it modestly, some of the others will do as well as myself. On the other hand, if you think there are any candidates connf.cleel with Auckland capitalists, or have a bit of land whero they would like a wharf, or connected with certain timber interests, then-likewise Burgesses VOTE FOR MoQOWAN AND INDEPENDENCE. 1013 MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
