: A man named Barnfield, employed rafting timber for Maney, is .supposed .to have been drowned crossing the Petane river on Saturday. He was about. 22 years of age,-a native of Bristol, and had friends at the Thames. The rivers are rapidly subsiding. The Council met this afternoon! The
Superintendent ma"de the financial statement. There is an increase on all items of ordinary revenue, but a decrease on territorial receipts.- Under the head of ordinary and miscellaneous, £56,527 in place of £41,269, as estimated. There is a marked increase of pilot, harbour, and wharf dues, which, while estimated to realise £1,350, have yielded £2,495. Tho; receipts under the head of territorial revenue, estimated at £34,650, have only amounted to £22,041. The cause of the falling off is attributed to nothing having been realised from the sale of reclaimed land at Gough Island, from which a large return was expected, jrhe,,,sheep .assess?,, meht and dipping fees have increased. The rents ot toll-bars aio falling off, consequent on the opening of the ' railway. The total expenditure fpr the financial year ending 30th June, £62,534? for •the ensuing year; population is increasing and revenue decreaiing. The revenue from' all sources is £42,166, as against £85,419 for last year. The estimated expenditure for providing for ihe ordinary services of' the Provincial Government, including gaol, hospital, •yolicei;'KarbttUr,-'surjeJs,^ighthous|,; &c, is £12,337. The - proposed'esipettditure for public works is £260,005. The Council ar-joumed until this day. •■' ? ] ■ Some books and pictures, recently imported here, have been seized by the Customs authorities as indecent. Probably the importers will be prosecuted at 'the Police-court, Qioof them is said to be an agent for the sale of books issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. v ::
