Fearfiil Mortality;
The Dauntless, from Fiji, brings tho following items of news :—
There is great mortality among children at Levuka. About 500 natives died at Koro Island lately.V i A gentleman from ltewa gave a very sad account of the fearful ravages measles is making throughout that district. He saj'S it is hardly possible to realise the abject misery that exists. Children of itender years, whose pareui s lay victims of the complaint, lie huddled together without food amd sustenance; starvation steps in tohkrraiss^thbipatient, and should his constitution master the disease, the last end. of the -unfortunate, sufferer is rendered all the more painful. A whale fishery has-been commenced by a local party. A Two tons of sugar arrived at Lctuka from the Bewa works, which realised £28 per ton. Measles has somewhat abated. Natives are arriving at Levuka with produce. ;. The distillation of rum has commenced in the group. • Levuka at present is full of planters. All speak hopefully of the future if the land question is speedily Settled.
