...... cWednesday.„. ■ Whem the Council met this afternoon, • MrGillies was re-elected Speaker,, by 18 \ to 4. A long discussion ensued, which:, was led .by- Mr Fish, contending that the election of Speaker must be confirmed by ;| the Crown. Ultimately the Speaker decided the matter by precedent of the ImperiarParliament, and the business of the Council' commenced. Both , morning "papers. condemn Mr Gillie* for offering himself for re-election. In Barrowman's action against the captain of the Auckland for putting him in irons, the jury returned a verdict of £50 damages. This day. Re the Governor's visit a grand citizens' ball is to be given. Intheaddress in reply to the Superintenr dent's opening speech is the following:— I With regard to the abolition of the provinces ! in the North Island, we concur in the opinion that any organic change of constitution ought to be made in a carefully guarded manner, and only after due deliberations, and that we ; should be better informed as to what organisation is tp.be proposed to supersede the existing institutions ~befor* agreeing to any change. . s
