By the arrival of the steamship Victoria we hate two or three days'later European and Australian news, but containing no very startling items. French and Spanish affairs seem to absorb a large share of attention, judging by the pro-, minence given to them in recent cablegrams. Both countries appear to have enough to do —the one in the endeavor to give firmness to, and the other in establishing the republican institutions which they have adopted. In the death of M. Guizot, the veteran author and statesman, France has lost one who, during the old regime, was prominent in politics. M. Guizot was born in 1787, consequently he would be in his 87th year at the time of his death. From Sydney we learn that the 'Frisco mail service is not likely to be abandoned, arrangements of a temporary character having been perfected. It is to be hoped that Mr. T. Russell, whose arrival is said to be anxiously looked forward to, will be. able to conclude on the part of this colony an agreement whereby the service will be continued as provided for in the contract abandoned by Mr. Hall. The Mikado left San Francisco on the 13th instant, the usual contract date, and she may be expected about the 9th or 10th October. .Owing to the breakdown of the HallForbes service, and the instructions sent home by the' Premier to the Agent General, the New Zealand portion of the mail will probably be inconsiderable.
