WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION Miss E. J. L. Davies presided at the executive , meeting of the South Canterbury Federation held recently in Timaru. Also present were Mesdames W. L. Harrison (secretary), A. J. Kennedy (acting-treasurer), A. H. Gillingham, F. M. Martin, C. T. Kerr, J- B. Smith, H. O’Connor, S. Unwin and E. Duff. The resignation of Mrs D. Loder -was received with regret, as she now resides in Oamaru. A letter of thanks to the women of New Zealand for their help in the collections of waste material was received from the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. In Canterbury the total contributions made to the Patriotic Fund was £12,380 front the sale of waste materials. Mrs Sawer, president of the Auckland Federation, will be present at the annual meeting of the Federation to be held in April. Mrs Martin reported on Milford’s birthday party, also the Group meeeting and the picnic in Temuka. Miss Davies reported on Peel Forest and Hilton, and is to give a travel talk at the Arowhenua Maori Institute on its next meeting day. Trees to replace those which had died could not be planted again this year owing to labour not being available to dig the holes. Mrs Duff reported on the Group Travel party to Anakiwa. Trips were being arranged to the Glaciers, also Stewart Island. A successful reunion luncheon was recently held for group travellers. Mrs Gillingham reported that three persons had been found hospitality in the country. Mrs Unwin reported that Mr Carter, the Adult Education tutor, had resigned and an endeavour was being made to get another tutor early in the New Year. Mrs Martin reported on the National Council of Women’s meeting which she had attended. A letter of thanks is to be sent to the librarian and her staff of the Timaru Public Library for their help in supplying Institutes with diagrams and directions for the making and dressing of dolls for the International Doll Exhibition, which was held recently. All Institutes are to forward their entries to Mrs E. Duff. Sutherlands, for the L. E. Williams baby trophy by the end of February. Members interested were asked to contribute to the Winston Churchill Fund. GAPES VALLEY There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Gapes Valley Women’s Institute. Mrs G. F. Bailey presided. Two new members, Mesdames E. G Temple and R. Parrish were welcomed. A letter from East Bridgeford, the link in England, was received. Mrs J. Toomey, who took the golden thread “The Home Within and Without,’’ passed on some useful hints. A competition for a picture given by Mrs W. P. D. Barker was won by Mrs J. Toomey. The Wandering Shilling was won by Mrs Patrick. Mrs McNaughton was elected honorary secretary in place of Mrs J. Lang. Mrs McNaughton gave a comprehensive report on the Federation meeting in Timaru. A demonstration of rug making was given by Mrs Green, of Hilton. It was announced that the Christmas party would be held a week earlier than the usual meeting date to enable members to be present at a Christmas Garden Party at the home of Mrs Green. Competitions resulted: Cold tea dish. Mrs G. F. Bailey 1, Mrs V. Le Lieyre 2. Flowers, A Section, Mrs V. Le Lievre; B Section, Miss Phyllis Patrick; C Section, Mrs H. R. Bailey. ENGAGEMENT STEWART—WARD We announce the engagement of Joan Ethel, third daughter of Mrs and the late Mr L. S. Ward, to Herbert Cecil, ex. P. 0., R.N.Z.N.. only son of Mrs O. Stewart, Palmerston North.
