Institute Party

The Christmas party organised by the Temuka Women’s Institute in the Parish Hall on. Tuesday evening at which returned servicemen and their relatives were the guests of honour attracted a large attendance and proved a most popular entertainment. A varied programme was presented, including dancing and musical items, a special feature being the madhatters’ oarade.

The president (Mrs F. M. Martini welcomed those present, particularly their returned servicemen guests. ’This is the first evening party the Temuka Institute has held for a number of years.” said Mrs Martin, “and I hope that It will become an annual event.”

Mesdames R. I. McGregor and D. C. Clark judged the madhatters’ parade, which was won by Mrs H. Greenfield and Mr B. Lucy. A soldiers’ Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs G. Mcßride and a statue waltz by Miss Joan Tozer and Miss Joan McGillen. Members of the Temuka Drama Group who presented a one-act play were Misses L. Huddleston, E. Henderson and G. Browne, Messrs H. Sutherland and M. Hayes. Other items were a pianoforte solo by Mrs M. J. Fitzgerald. vocal solos by Miss H. Dick, Miss J. Tozer and Miss M. Wilson, a humorous recitation by Mrs G. Smart, a cornet solo by Mr D. Wilson and a violin solo by Kenneth Macdonald. Extras were played by Mrs H. Wilson, Mrs M. J. Fitzgerald and Mr H. Sutherland. Mr W. Galbraith was M.C.

Sunday School Concert The annual concert of the Temuka Methodist Sunday School was held in the Sunday School Hall on Tuesday evening, before a good attendance ol parents and friends. After the concert, the Rev. J. H. Woolford spoke briefly to the parents and presented the prizes for the year. The programme was as follows: Ross and Shirley Moulton (pianoforte duet), Terry Fitzgerald (piano accordion), Graeme Holwell (recitation), Bernice Parkes (dance), Marion Stokes. Lois Holwell. Miss D. Levens (pianoforte solos), Lynette and Gillian Smart, and Miss B. Andrew and Miss M. Levens (vocal duets) B. Parkes, S. Fletcher and D. Levens (vocal trio), Jocelyn Stone. Marion Ackroyd. Jessie Pierce, Frank Pierce and Miss M. Levens (vocal solos). Rex Cross (violin solo). The concert was preceded by a children’s tea and the teachers afterwards entertained the parents and children to supper. Beneficial Rain The 2.18 inches of rain which fell on Tuesday afternoon and yesterday morning was welcomed by both farmers and gardeners. Conditions generally had become comparatively dry considering the wet season experienced up to the end of October. Persistent nor’-westers during November dried the ground and both crons and pastures were being seriously affected. Root crops particularly, the sowing of which has been very late this season, will benefit, and as one farmer said yesterday: “The rain will be worth thousands of pounds to the country.” Bowling The following rinks will represent Temuka on Saturday next against Timaru Park at Timaru: T.
