RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Dec. B—Canterbury J.C. Dec. B—Woodville J.C. Dec. B—Waikato R.C. Entries for all handicap events and final forfeits for the N.Z. Champion Stakes, 1945, to be run on Boxing Day, close with the secretary, Ashburton Trotting Club, on Thursday, December 6, at 8 p.m.—Advt. The new owner of Immediate is Mr J. Bennett, of Sydney. The New Zealand Oaks winner, Aletliea, won the McKelvie Memorial Handicap at Bulls on Saturday for the third time in succession. Three of the four races won by Caithness have been run at Riccarton. The sprinter, Ring Chief, trained by J. A. Rowland at Invercargill, may be tried as a hurdler. The breakdown of Psalm is reported to be less serious than was supposed, and there is a possibility that she may be trained again this season. High Play, who is now in charge of F. Manning in Melbourne, is to be turned out for a spell. Another Australian horse in F. J. Smith’s stable is On Guard, a four year trotter by Walla Walla. He won the trotting section of the New South Wales Derby last year. Pride o’ Mossburn has been sent back to Gore. The change in the weather came too late for him to benefit by it. It was not expected that Longsword would tackle the Fendalton with 9.12, but he would have added interest to the Canterbury Cup if he had remained for the third day. Kaitoa, who broke his back by a fall in the Rangitikei Cup, was by Man’s Pal from Satisfy, and was bred at Gladstone Park, Orari. Mr M. J. Meehan Is reported to be recovering nicely from the serious illness with which he was stricken two days after his arrival in Melbourne. Taking a line through Benbecula, Irish Note, was raised 101 b in the Fendalton for his Jockey Club Handicap win. This placed him within 41b of Golden Souvenir. Southland horses usually secure a fair share of the prize-money at Forbury, but last Saturday the province failed to win a race. Heliopolis was not taken to the front in the Reid Memorial as he had been on the first day at Claudelands, but he raced kindly in behind and won handsomely. Irish Note has not tackled a middle distance, but he has won three races over a mile, and his effort in the Jockey Club Handicap suggested that 10 furlongs would not trouble him. H. E. Russell, who raced two good horses, Mala and Golden Wings, in Sydney, has been out of the racing business for four or five years, but he is applying for a trainer’s licence in Melbourne. Chung Chong earned £lOOO for second in the New Zealand Cup, more than he would have received had he won one of the main handicaps at the Auckland meeting. In addition he is in the Auckland Cup a bit lighter than would have been the case had he won at home. Mr Morgan O’Brien, who died in Christchurch a few days ago, was at one time in business in Waimate. He was a brother of the late Mr Jeremiah O’Brien, of Oamaru. Mr M. O'Brien raced many horses, and owned one good galloper (Dictate), one good pacer (Prince Pointer), and one good trotter (Young Blake). It was supposed that Hippodrome needed a soft track to be seen to advantage, but he won easily on fast going at Ellerslie last week. The St. Andrews Handicap was his second good stake this season. Hippodrome is still trained by D. E. Cotton.
