AIR SPEED RECORD
Attempt Postponed LONDON. October 31. One patch of fog in otherwise cleat skies over Britain covered the Herne Bay all’ speed record course to-day causing the cancellation of the final test flights of the two Meteors. Weather permitting, they will be held to-mor-row. Revised figures of Group Captain Wilson's speeds in the Meteor Britannia yesterday reveal 601 miles an hour on the first run against the wind and 609 miles an hour down wind. The discrepancy between the revised times and those announced previously was due to a faulty timing apparatus. An official of the Ministry of Aircraft Production stated that the discrepancy in the Meteor timings was not a mechanical error, but. an extraordinary miscalculation. The figures given out on Tuesday were based on a snap check on the special electrical timing equipment.
