MAIN TRUNK LINE
Subsidence Of A Portion (N.Z.P.A.) TAUMARUNUI, Nov. 1. As the result of a subsidence near Kakahi, a quarter- of a mile of the railway line is twisted and broken, and in several places the bed of the track is scored by deep fissures, and these are Still increasing. The general manager of railways (Mr J. Sawers) said he could give no indication of the time required to effect repairs. The engineer's plans would be governed to a great extent by the report of the geologist who was being sent to study the nature of the ground formation. A stream which runs down the hillside and formerly went through culverts under the road and railway has gone underground, and it is feared this mav cause further trouble. The road to Kakahi, which is a few yards above the railway line, has subsided in general and in several places as much as six feet of it is twisted and cracked for about a quarter of a mile. In places the moving hillside resembles a giant staircase with steps several feet high.
