WAIMATE SCHOOL CADETS

Inspection By General • Puttick Value Of Training Emphasised For the first time since the establishment of the Waimate High School as a separate institution, 16 years ago. the school cadet unit was honoured yesterday by a visit by the General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, Lieutenant-General E. Puttick. Accompanying the General were Colonel H. A. Meyer, Military Attache to the United States Legation and Brigadier E. T. Rowllings, O. C. Southern Military District. The party was met by the Rector and staff chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. T. A. Wilson, and after signing the visitors' boc':. a photograph was taken. The General then proceeded to an inspection of the school cadets, and the women of the party were taken on an inspection of the school. Addressing the • cadets, General Puttick expressed pleasure at beingable to visit the school. He urged the boys not to regard cadet training as of no value. "At the outset, to show you that it is. I will tell you how the school cadets and the territorial training system was proved to be well worth while. When a crisis faced New Zealand an army of 90.000 men had to be mobilised for home defence, supported in time by two divisions of the United States Army and Marine Corps. But this country was short of 1000 officers. With ho time to train them in the ordinary way they were chosen from likely leaders with cadet training. In this way the cadet system directly assisted the war effort. "It teaches you the value of team work,” General Puttick added, "and this is of tremendously high value in the military sphere." The boys at school to-day were fortunate in that their masters were men who had been officers of high rank in the Second N.Z.E.F., in the Air Force and in the Navy. Military training was valuable because of the pride it engendered in the individual not just for himself but the whole unit. He expressed the hope that never again would secondary school cadets be called to form the basis for an army for war. Colonel H. A. Meyer. military attache to the United States Legation, also spoke “to the sons of the Kiwis” using a touch of humour to emphasise his point, teamwork. “We did a great job when we were asked this time, we had good friendship and now it’s " up to all of us to keep that friendshin,” he said. The Rector. Mr M. Leadbetter, in thanking General Puttick for his visit to the school said it was a great day in the history of the school. They were proud of the part post-primary schools had played in the war, and they appreciated the visit of the General so soon after the conclusion of a strenuous period of service. General Puttick was brought back to New Zealand at a critical period—when the country faced an unprecedented situation. He ‘"was immediately faced with the task of organising an army of 90,000 men, and when the history of the war was written the General's decisions would be found very true. He then expressed their debt of gratitude for the services given by General Puttick to New Zealand in the time of crisis. The party was then entertained at afternoon tea by the Rector- and staff, leaving later for Christchurch.
