Sports Meeting In Timaru Keen Competition The South and Mid-Canterbury postprimary schools’ athletic sports were held at the Rectory grounds yesterday in fair weather. For the most part competition was keen, and in a number of events good performances were recorded. In the intermediate long jump the winner cleared 17 feet 64 inches, which was a good effort. The junior long jump was won in three inches less. The winner of the intermediate high jump exceeded the height jumped by the winner of the senior event, clearing five feet one inch. In the first heat of the intermediate 220 yards the winner's time was 24 2-5 seconds, beating by one-fifth of a second the best time recorded in the senior section. This annual event was inaugurated last year with the idea of developingathletics in post-primary schools. Emphasis is placed on the school and not on the individual competitiors. No cups or trophies are awarded, and points are not taken for school aggregates. The meeting merely allows the schools to measure the prowess of their athletics against those of other schools. A committee of teachers ensured the smooth running of events.
