Mayor’s Suggestion
Lamps of Remembrance, burning continually on prominent features from Bluff to Auckland will be a suggestion from the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A E. S. Hanan) to a conference of mayors to be held in Wellington at a later date to consider the question of suitable war memorials. This conference will be held at the instigation of the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E Parry). Referring to the Lamp of Remembrance to be erected in Timaru. Mr Hanan said yesterday that £35 had so far been raised publicly, and work on the memorial would begin as soon as possible He had distributed subscription lists to business firms in Timaru. and would be glad to have them returned to him as soon as convenient. “For the first month or two the lamp will be an experimental one he added, “because it has yet to be decided what will be the effects of the weather on the type of lamp decided upon.”
