NATURAL ENEMIES OF RABBIT
Reward Offered For Skins Acclimatisation Society Unpopular The Tekapo Rabbit Board protested in a letter to the South Canterbury Catchment Board, which met in Timaru yesterday, against the action of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society in offering a reward of 2 6 for the skins of stoats, polecats and ferrets. These animals were the natural enemies of rabbits, stated the letter, and were responsible for the destruction of a great number of the pest. The rabbit was one of the causes of erosion in the backcountry and its destruction should be encouraged in even’ way possible. Supporting the Rabbit Board. Mr C. V. Kirke .said that he knew of several cases were landowners successfully defeated the rabbit pest by the use of poison and by the action of the rabbit's natural enemies. Trapping was not favoured because the rabbit’s enemies were caught as well as the rabbit. In many parts of the district the country had been eaten out by rabbits .and erosion had begun.
The board agreed to support the Rabbit Board in any action it contemplated.
